On May 5th, Liberation Day in the Netherlands, MasterPeace043 will celebrate peace by organizing small music and dance performances in the city center of Maastricht. The day will be closed by a flashmob on the main square of Maastricht: 't Vrijthof.

The city center of Maastricht is an ideal location to create awareness for MasterPeace; the city is visited by (international) tourists, local citizens, students and peace celebrators. This is the ideal platform to launch the first event for MasterPeace in Maastricht.

MasterPeace043 in Egypt!
Dear reader, follower,

It was already a few weeks ago when my colleague Maarten Derksen reported on the progress of our MasterPeace club in Maastricht. Now, I am happy to tell you more about what we have done so far and tell you my own experiences with MasterPeace in the past few weeks.

From March 24th to 26th I have attended the MasterPeace Clubs bootcamp in Ahn Sokhna, Egypt. This bootcamp served as a congress for all MasterPeace clubs around the world and gave me the opportunity to meet fellow MasterPeacers from other countries.

For MasterPeace and a holiday, I travelled to Egypt on March 17th. In Egypt I visited the MasterPeace bootcamp, and did a short visit to the MasterPeace Headquarters in Cairo. A spot were many motivated MasterPeacers work to get MasterPeace to become an established brand for peace initiatives around the world. They are doing a great job.

Experiencing the bootcamp was also impressive, as it showed me the collective energy present among positive minded people around the world, determined to make a better society in their own countries. My primary goal during this congress was to get inspired by stories of people that faced real conflict and situations of war and destruction. These stories would give me a more meaningful idea about the importance of peace and the absence of conflict in society.

And yes, I heard many impressive stories from fellow MasterPeacers from Sierra Leone,
Kenya, Afghanistan , Uganda and Gambia. All of these personal stories learned me one thing, that peace is not a given fact in all parts of the world. Hence, I am confident that MasterPeace and the work my colleagues do will have a positive impact on society and on the future of these countries. Having contact with fellow MasterPeace gave me new inspiration to work on activities in Maastricht and I will put this into practice already on April 26th in a joint event with MasterPeace club Sierra Leone, which will visit the Netherlands to attend the Charles Taylor trial in The Hague.

In Maastricht, things are working out well. We are getting ready to celebrate national
liberation day on May 5th together with many artists and young people from Maastricht. After many years, Maastricht will have a liberation celebration again. We will host several artists in the city centre to perform their musical skills and entertain the people of Maastricht. Also, we will organize a grand flashmob on the Vrijthof square in the afternoon. If you want to join this flashmob, please go to our website www.masterpeace-043.nl for more information.

Besides getting ready for the first big MasterPeace event in Maastricht, we have been networking to grow the MasterPeace movement in Maastricht. This resulted in getting into contact with United by Passion, a non-profit movement aiding people to share their passions and mobilize to put their passions into meaningful actions. As a club, we attended a workshop in Maastricht and got inspired by many positive minded people that also want to help in building MasterPeace. We are looking forward to work with them.

Lastly, I want to invite you to become part of the MasterPeace movement yourself and join
our activities in the Maastricht area. Become a volunteer or start your own initiative related to peace, dialogue and resolving conflict in society.  I am looking forward to tell you more about our work next time!  I hope to meet you on the 5th of May!

What can happen in two weeks
Dear reader, follower, MasterPeacer,

I am happy to write you this blog about the activities we organize in Maastricht for MasterPeace. Every two weeks either Karel van Eechoud or me will write you a blog about the events we organize, and our thoughts about (Master)Peace.

With this post, I want to tell you more about MasterPeace043 and my personal involvement.

It is extraordinary what can happen in two weeks time. The United Nations did not agree on sanctions against Syria due to the veto of China and Russia and in the mean time, recording the scarce information, the bloodshed in the streets of cities like Homs, Hama and Damascus still continues. This for me shows the importance to continue the dialogue on peace and conflict resolution around the world.

In comparison with the horror just so few kilometers away, it feels almost hypocritical to write about the developments of MasterPeace in Maastricht. Still I believe that even the smallest contribution to MasterPeace as a peace movement is important. That gives me the energy to continue the lobbying and organization of our projects (www.masterpeace-043.nl).

On the 15th of February we organized the first gathering for MasterPeace043. The goal; to inform those who want to learn more about MasterPeace and to create a platform for networking. We felt it was a great success; enthusiastic people willing to contribute to our projects and a greatexpansion of our network.

This week we also had a meeting with Daniëlle Willemse and Saskia van Laar at the headquarters of MasterPeace in Utrecht. We received a lot of input in our quest to become a MasterPeace Club and had an interesting talk about linking the international (student)network in Maastricht and the Netherlands to  MasterPeace. The meeting resulted in a lot of positivity and a lot of ideas that we took back to Maastricht.

Next on the agenda is the preparation of our first project; “Maastricht celebrates MasterPeace”. On the 5th of May, Dutch Liberation Day, we intend to overwhelm Maastricht with the existence and values of MasterPeace! During the day we will set up several small stages in the inner city on which small dance, music and acting performances will be performed. We ask the performers to let their act be inspired by the passion statement of MasterPeace.

The final act of the day will be a flash mob on the most famous Maastricht square; ‘t Vrijthof. The flash mob will make it crystal clear: MasterPeace, the most heartwarming peace initiative is in Maastricht!

From “Peace-storming” to “Peace-building” in Maastricht
Dear reader, follower, MasterPeacer,

I am happy to write you this blog about the activities we organize in Maastricht for MasterPeace. Every two weeks either Maarten Derksen or me will write you a blog about the events we organize, and our thoughts about (Master)Peace.

With this post, I want to tell you more about MasterPeace043 and my personal involvement.

It was just before Christmas last year when Maarten Derksen and me, decided to bring together 9 enthusiastic students and take the initiative to sit together and brainstorm about peace. Just a few weeks before, I saw Ilco van der Linden (Creative Director MasterPeace) speak at a TEDx conference, and I realized that I could not step back from making use of the opportunities MasterPeace offers to make people get involved into peacebuilding and a new positive way of looking at things. I am convinced that my generation, will play a crucial role in changing the path that society is taking, from conflicts and intolerance, to co-creation and mutual respect. If I want to contribute to this change, I have to become part of it! I see it as an unique opportunity to work with motivated and positively-minded people and built links between interesting people and initiatives, that together will create understanding and eventually peace. It is not directly in our power to stop armed conflicts around the world of which, unfortunately, we have many examples. It is about creating the foundations for a better dialogue about peace, teaching young people in classrooms about what other people have to experience under hard conditions of war and destruction, working together on fun and new projects to create awareness…that is what we can do!

For me, peace movements are not about 60’s-like hippy-protests or hard negotiations between political forces of opposing powers, it is about what all of us can contribute, and if we all take a share, albeit a tiny share, in the great venture we call MasterPeace, we can say to everyone we created something together, no matter where we come from or what we do in our lives. I am more than willing to help building up this venture with all of you, I am looking forward to being a social entrepreneur!

Back to MasterPeace043: now, almost two months after my first ideas about MasterPeace, we know that the process of creating ideas about peace is called “Peacestorming”. Following this process has given birth to “MasterPeace043”, bundling several MasterPeace activities in Maastricht and surroundings. Personally, I was convinced that Maastricht is an ideal city to host MasterPeace events, as it is an international and diverse community (young/old, international, students, entrepreneurs), and historically valuable city.

What will we do in the upcoming months? MasterPeace043 will be action oriented! Meaning that we want to organize impactful events, that require significant action, and hence need involvement from people. In the first few weeks of March MasterPeace will be around Maastricht during the Ragweek activities beginning of March. The Ragweek Maastricht is a fundraising event for charity. Therefore, connecting to the Ragweek will be valuable as both of us underline the importance of supporting society in making a better future. During the Ragweek we will be able to do fundraising for MasterPeace as well. Later, we will organize our first event on May 5th in the city center of Maastricht. On national liberation day, we will organize Maastricht celebrates MasterPeace, with several cultural activities in the city. Next blog will tell you more about this.

To end this post, I would like to report to you that I have been at the MasterPeace Café last week in Amsterdam, where I met Ilco van der Linden and Mohamed Helmy (Managing Director) as well as many more very active MasterPeacers. As MasterPeace043, we saw very inspiring talks and connected to other great MasterPeace initiatives. This will definitely help us to create more impact for peace in Maastricht! Especially, the feeling of togetherness and unity was felt during the Café meeting, as there was a room full of inspiring people that want to be active in creating peace, together. But also, we see projects popping up in other parts of the world. Which is of enormous importance to MasterPeace as a global initiative. Building upon this global movement is what we want to achieve in Maastricht as well. Will you help us, become a volunteer or MasterPeacer, or will you set up your own project? Let’s get in touch via Facebook, Twitter or email (info@masterpeace-043.nl). And, like I said in the beginning of this post, creating peace is not only happening at round tables or next to campfires, it is happening within the reach of everyone’s abilities. Take part, take responsibility!

I hope to meet you soon!

Karel van Eechoud
